Don’t Let a Breakup Affect Your Mental Health

We've all been through breakups. Sometimes a breakup brings relief and provides a new lease on life. In other situations, a breakup can be a significant source of sadness and frustration. In these latter instances, you must be mindful of your mental health and emotional well-being. Otherwise, your breakup could lead to a whole host of other problems.

6 Common Mental Side Effects of a Breakup

A particularly poignant breakup can produce a litany of unwanted side effects. This may include symptoms like:

1. Confusion. While most breakups are preceded by a period of uncertainty in which a split-up seems inevitable, this isn't always the case. Sometimes a breakup can come out of nowhere, which leads to feelings of confusion.

2. Inadequacy. When someone breaks up with you, it's tempting to feel like you aren't enough. And if the breakup is especially hostile, mean words can stick with you and cause you to feel self-conscious or inadequate.

3. Loneliness. There's a certain degree of loneliness that frequently stems from a breakup. You go from spending lots of time with this one person to having a large void in your daily schedule and routine.

4. Anger. Perhaps you broke up with your ex because of something they did – like cheat, lie, or manipulate your feelings. It's only natural for this to conjure up feelings of anger and frustration.

5. Anxiety. When a breakup makes you feel like your world is crumbling, anxiety can easily creep in. If not dealt with, this anxiety can evolve into something bigger over time.

6. Depression. When you combine feelings of confusion, inadequacy, loneliness, anger, and anxiety, depression is a natural result. Sometimes depression lasts for a few days, while other times it can develop into a chronic and serious issue.

Ways to Care for Your Mental Health

Most breakups simply take time. After a few days or weeks, things get better. But in other situations, they can be particularly tough to recover from. In light of this, here are a few simple tips to help you care for your mental health if/when you find yourself wallowing in the aftermath of a hard split.

  • Recognize Your Weaknesses

Self-awareness is paramount. Understanding what makes you tick and how you respond to certain life issues and stimuli will help you make smart, educated choices. In particular, you should become intimately familiar with the crutches you turn to in times of weakness. For example, someone with a history of substance abuse can easily relapse when a breakup causes depression. Likewise, someone with anger issues can lash out and strain friendships and/or jobs when frustration boils over. The more you know about these issues, the more proactive you can be in avoiding triggers.

  • Put Things in Perspective

Things are never as good or bad as they seem. This is a good rule of thumb for life in general (and breakups in particular). It's one thing to say this, but it's something else entirely to believe it. Reiterate this point over and over again. Doing so will put your breakup into perspective.

  • Start Writing

"Research shows that regularly reflecting on how you're coping with your breakup in a structured way reduces post-breakup loneliness and distress because it helps you redefine your sense of self," breakup expert Elle Huerta writes. "It's also a really great way to practice letting go and release the thoughts and emotions that have built up during a breakup."

Regardless of whether you're a writer or not, regular journaling can help you come to terms with what happened and begin the process of emotional healing.

  • Practice Self-Care

A little self-care is never a bad idea – especially when you're struggling through a breakup. Rather than viewing things like sleep, healthy eating, exercise, and massages, as selfish luxuries, look at them as powerful tools for warding off feelings of anxiety and depression.

  • Surround Yourself With the Right People

Resist the temptation to isolate yourself after a breakup. Being around other people is healthy and proactive. The key is to surround yourself with the right people. This means spending time with people who are encouraging, positive, and uplifting. Their attitudes will naturally rub off on you.

Putting it All Together

Everyone responds to troubling situations in their own unique way. Some breakups come as a relief, while others prove to be especially challenging. By adopting a proactive approach that prioritizes your mental and emotional health, you can suppress some of the negative symptoms associated with a breakup and move on with your life.

How to Create a Bedroom for the Perfect Night’s Sleep

We all suffer from inadequate sleep now again, and some more than others. But, did you know there are a few little changes you can make to have a great night's sleep every day? That's right. With a few small adjustments, your room will be calling you to sleep every evening, and you'll look forward to getting into bed.

Photo: ArchitecturalDigest

So, how can it be done? Here are a few top tips to get you on the road to sleeping like a log and not worrying if you'll be awake half the night. Just don't fall asleep before the end!

1. Keep it Cool

Being hot in bed is just one of the reasons that we toss and turn all night. So during warm months, it's a good idea to keep the window slightly ajar for a breeze to flow in. And, during the winter, don't have the heating on all night as you'll be up in the early hours feeling sweaty.

It's also a nice idea to have a humidifier to keep the air between 30 and 40% humidity This is particularly effective in dry months.

2. Lights Out

Well, obviously we don't sleep with a big white light on above our beds. But, just a little light can have a significant effect. If there are street lamps outside, it may be time to invest in some black-out curtains, as they can really disturb your rest.

Also, ban any screens in the bedroom. Did you know that watching TV or looking at your phone can affect your sleep greatly? Even just a few minutes of screen time can do a lot of damage. It's better to get into the habit of reading before bed.

3. A Comfy Bed

Some of us like soft, squishy beds, and others a firmer one. Whatever kind you like, you want it to be as comfortable as possible so. Memory foam mattresses are super comfy and can be found in all kinds of designs.

As well as the mattress, bedding is very important. Some good quality sheets can go a long way. And don't have anything too heavy as you may feel squashed and suffocated in the middle of the night. Heavy things on top can actually cause nightmares too.

4. Block Out Noise

The last thing you want when you're ready to crash is a party next door or a car alarm down the street. Some earplugs can be really useful if you find that you can't get your head down unless in complete silence.

This is another reason to get that TV out of your room. It may be easy to fall asleep to, but even though you don't notice, you're still listening even when you're asleep. So, give your brain some rest and take it to another room.

5. Make Your Bed

This is something quick and easy to do every morning before you leave for work. There's just something special about getting into a neat and tidy bed, instead of one where the sheets are all over the place.

This helps to create a relaxed and calm feeling before you even get into it. So it's worth taking a couple of minutes each morning to make sure it's done.

6. Keep it Tidy

Even if you aren't the world's tidiest person, keeping at least the bedroom free of clutter adds to the serenity. And that is the feeling you want when you go to rest. If you are laying in a messy room, your mind may take on similar feelings and won't be able to relax properly.

7. Relaxing Scents

Perhaps you think that a smell seems like a silly idea to help you get more shut-eye. But, it can do wonders. There are some available that are specifically designed to help you relax and unwind.

Lavender is said to put you in a relaxed mood and actually cause drowsiness. So a few scented candles and lavender-infused detergent may not be a bad idea after all.

8. Meditation

Sometimes we think that this is a lengthy task that you need to set aside a whole part of your day. Well, it's not. It can be done in a few minutes and aid you in winding down just before bed. You can find advice and videos online these days to show what to do if you've never done it before.

Transform Your Sleep Space

We hope that if you put into action just a few of these ideas that you'll be able to rest better after a long day. There'll be no more nights spent awake for hours, and you'll be feeling refreshed every morning. Trust us, they really work.

How to Sleep Well as a Modern Parent

When it comes to modern parenting there are many challenges, one of those is how to sleep well. Sleep in itself is not just an issue for you either, it's something that should be addressed family-wide. After all, if one member of the family isn't getting enough sleep, then it's going to affect the status quo one way or another.

The best thing you can do is to first address your sleep patterns and routines; parents directly influence their children's routines so this is super important. The goals and approaches you should set for yourself and your family won't all be the same, and they will change depending on the person's age, needs and circumstances.

Photo: PopSugar

Without a proper routine, it's impossible to sleep well. If the times you head off to the land of nod are sporadic and not properly structured, your quality of sleep will suffer. In the modern age, people of all ages are getting progressively busier, between work, school and social obligations, it can be difficult to stick to a proper routine when it comes to that all-important sleep. Plus, the introduction of technology has proven to add its challenges in.

Typically, with adults and older children, night-time activities can become a real hindrance when it comes to settling down for your much-needed sleep. Nowadays, more and more activities on digital devices are getting in the way. Whether it's your favourite show on the TV, video games on the XBOX, PlayStation or tablet or just chatting with your friends on your phone; there are many distractions.

When it comes to your younger children, they may not happily sleep in their own bed yet, if this is the case then this can have a direct influence on your sleep. In these instances, establishing a solid sleep routine with ideal behaviours are critical. Introducing falling asleep on their own, in their own bed, at a set bedtime is your ultimate goal.

As parents, if you make your quality of sleep a priority, this will massively resonate with your children from a young age into later life. Plus, because you're getting such a good night's sleep you'll find that you're a lot more patient and have a lot more energy to deal with all of the other demands of life and parenting.

Steps For A Perfect Sleep

But, that's easier said than done, right? There are a few steps that you can take to reaching this ideal, however. Firstly, keep a regular sleep schedule, where your bedtime and wake up time are the same… even on weekends.

Exercise can also be a big factor in getting a high-quality night's sleep. Just, don't work out too close to bedtime. Before you go to bed you should be implementing another consistent routine that's in place to relax. This means no screens and limits the amount you're exposed to artificial light.

A final step you can take to give yourself the best chance of a great night's sleep lies within your bedroom. Keep it clean, cool and make sure you can make it as dark as you require and ideally, keep digital devices and electronics to a minimal. But, potentially the most important aspect is your bed and mattress. If you're not comfortable then your chances of feeling well-rested in the morning are minimal if not impossible.

Although frames are a bit easier to work with, the mattress you're sleeping on is make or break. Luckily there are plenty of sites online that will help you identify what your most comfortable mattress will be.

But, what about your children? How can you ensure that they're getting the best night's sleep too, in turn, allow you to get yours? Well, there are multiple ways for all ages of children.

How To Ensure Your Children Get The Best Night's Sleep

For your baby, their unpredictable sleep patterns can have a detrimental effect on your sleep. You may or may not cope well with a highly interrupted night's sleep. Two methods are typically brought to the table when discussing how to sleep train your baby; graduated extinction and bedtime fading.

Many don't appreciate and aren't comfortable with the idea of letting their children cry without comforting them and helping them get back to sleep. If this sounds like you then bedtime fading might be the way forward, choosing to delay bedtime by 15-minutes each day. But, if you think you can handle it, many believe that graduated extinction helps your child develop vital skills in independently comforting themselves.

With older children, having strict, consistent bedtime rules are key. Ensure they turn off their devices, and settle on a bedtime routine that will allow them to follow the same behaviour pattern each night. First a period of screen-free relaxation with plenty of time to fall asleep naturally and get a solid amount of high-quality sleep. This will become even more necessary when your child hits adolescence, a time where the body clock is said to shift towards sleeping in later and staying up later.

Screen time may become a significant point of conflict with your older children, but the key is to be realistic and monitor their behaviour carefully; if they're not getting enough sleep or don't have enough time for other tasks reduce their screen time allowance. Or, steer a portion of the time into a positive experience; watching a movie as a family for instance.

3 Philippine Landmarks to Discover By Motorcycle

Explore the lesser-known hidden treasures in the Philippines and prepare to be blown away. This tropical paradise is a classic example of a place that has more than meets the eye. It is no wonder why the country experienced an increase of around 7.7% in foreign visitors in 2018, compared to the previous year. Aside from famous places like Palawan , Boracay, Panglao Island or Siargao, hidden treasures waiting to be explored. What are some of these?

1. Explore Limestone Caves at Kaparkan Falls

If Baguio is known for its rice terraces, then Abra is known for its nature-formed terraced waterfall. The spectacular spring terraces will never cease to amaze you. It reminds you of a fiction novel that describes a waterfall in an unknown paradise, except that it is right there before your eyes. Standing 175 meters tall with a width of 30 meters, the stunning Kaparkan Falls is a sight to behold. The pools situated with each layer of white limestone are perfect for soaking your tired bodies. No words can simply capture the loveliness and allure of Kaparkan Falls.

2. Food Trip Through Guimaras Island

Did you know that in 1995, the Guinness Book of World Records listed Guimaras mango as the sweetest in the world? More than the delicious fruit that is grown and exported across the country, the island-province offers an array of awesome features. From white sand beaches and islets with diving areas perfect for snorkeling to wind farms, as well as exquisite flora and fauna, you'll never get enough of Guimaras.

The waters surrounding the group of islands and islets are teeming with fish and have been known to be frequented by various species of dolphins and whales. Remember to get yourself travel insurance first before going to these areas as some resorts require you to have them in case you go snorkeling or diving.

3. Discover the Mystery of Siquijor Island

To the east of Guimaras, right after the landmass of Negros Island, is the island-province of Siquijor. The place has long been known as a haven of mysticism, with residents believing in the supernatural.

In recent years, officials of the island-province opened its doors to local visitors and travelers from across the globe. Needless to say, what they saw completely captivated them. The white sand beaches and pristine waters are nothing like you have ever seen before. The island also boasts of many attractions like the Cambugahay Falls and the Capilay and Guiwanon Spring Parks.

Many of these attractions are not featured in international tourist magazines so you can expect to enjoy these places along with few tourists and locals. However, visiting one, if not all of these destinations will surely make the trip worthwhile when you travel by motor.

5 Powerful Tactics to Ace Your Next Business Presentation

In many businesses, presentations are a way of life. You might have three or four big presentations every single week. The question is, are you making the most out of these opportunities, or are you sort of running through the motions? Sadly, most are doing the latter. But with a few key techniques and strategies, you can take your presentation skills from average to noteworthy.

5 Powerful Presentation Tactics

Presentation skills aren't innate – they're cultivated over time. If you're looking for a way to take your presentation skills to the next level, the following tactics will help:

Photo: MyTechDecisions

1. Know Your Audience

It's impossible to deliver a persuasive presentation without knowing your audience. In particular, you should familiarize yourself with:

  • Roles. Whom are you speaking to? There's a difference between a gatekeeper and a decision-maker. You'll speak differently to a room full of superiors than you would to a room of subordinates. Understanding roles is arguably the most important element of knowing your audience.
  • Pain points. What problems exist for your audience? How are they trying to overcome them? How can your presentation bridge the gap, so to speak?
  • Pressure points. If pain points are major problem areas, pressure points are the issues that make your audience uneasy. They're uncomfortable talking points that require proactive solutions.
  • Communication preferences. It's helpful to understand the communication preferences of your audience. Some people want cold hard facts, while other people like funny anecdotes. Some people prefer thorough presentations, while others would prefer to hear the highlights and main takeaways.

You won't always be able to uncover this information, but it's helpful when you can. If nothing else, it allows you to tailor your delivery to the individuals on the receiving end.

2. Tell a Story

The most compelling business presentations are the ones that tell a story. Storytelling is akin to filling in a pencil drawing with color. It brings life to the framework and makes it easier for people to relate with the subject at hand.

With storytelling, you want to make sure you don't get too lost in the details. Be sure to balance your anecdotes with substantive material. If there's too little of the latter, your presentation will fall flat and people will be left searching for correlation.

3. Use Unpredictable Visuals

One of the worst things you can do as a presenter is develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes every single talking point on a slide. A busy, complex visual display will overload people with information and encourage them to stop listening. Instead, you want to produce simple, yet unpredictable visuals that complement your presentation without overpowering what you're saying. Try using a single image for each slide, or even a one-word display that communicates your main point.

4. Hand Out Booklets

In this age of digital oversaturation, there's something to be said for physical interaction. You can make a statement by handing out booklets that coincide with your presentation. Something simple is all you need. With an online printing service, you can get booklets very inexpensively and with a short turnaround time.

5. Keep it to 3 Points

For all of the amazing things the human brain is capable of doing, it's severely limited in its ability to remember lots of information in a single sitting. Researchers agree that three takeaways is the most you should leave an audience with on any one topic.

"The sad reality is that we live in a world with short attention span," public speaking expert Scott Schwertly writes. "Presenters either win hearts by being succinct or they neglect this responsibility and get forgotten forever. Therefore, the stage or front of the room is not the appropriate place to exhibit your depth of knowledge via 17 different takeaways. No one is going to remember them, or you."

When planning your presentation, it's best to have a short intro, followed by three simple points, followed by a concise conclusion that ties everything together.

Seize the Opportunity

Whether you're an intern at a small business or the CEO of a large organization, every presentation is an opportunity. It could be a chance to earn a promotion, or to motivate people to move toward a larger goal. Whatever the case may be, you need to be prepared to seize the opportunity and make the most of the time you have. By improving your approach to delivering business presentations, you'll notice a significant improvement in how you plan and execute. Naturally, this will lead to superior outcomes that spark positive results.

Creative Lighting Options That Will Add Character To Your Home

Most homes have very similar lighting – overhead lamps, maybe paired with a ceiling fan, small table lamps, and tall floor lamps. It can get boring after a while and it's time to get out of this rut. Creative lighting can help your home stand out and allow you to express your personality, not just see more clearly. Check out these 5 fun and fashionable alternatives to your basic lamp and take your home to the next level.

1. Consider A Pendant

Photo: StyleCurator.

Overhead lighting is the most common style found in bathrooms, but it's terrible for applying makeup and getting ready. Swap out those fixtures for the more subtle tones of a pendant light. Pendant lights are ideal for spaces with little natural light and provide a mood similar to what you would get from a sconce – gentle and muted rather than harsh and yellow.

2. Try A DIY

Photo: Katandibin

Most people don't think to modify their own lamps, maybe because it feels too close to doing electrical work. Whatever the reason, though, there are actually a number of easy and attractive crafts you can do to upgrade your home's lighting. This lace bulb cover, for example, only requires a few supplies and can be placed over a basic bare bulb, providing an elegant cover for what might otherwise be an eyesore.

3. Style The Small Spaces

Photo: BatteryOperatedCandles

One great way to upgrade your home's lighting is by focusing on often overlooked spaces, such as the windows and bookshelves. Use lighting to style these spaces by placing battery operated candles in the windows or fixing a small lamp to the underside of the bookshelf to illuminate art or photographs underneath. This kind of lighting is as much about accessorizing the space as it is about any sort of function, but such small elements can have a big impact on the space.

4. Print It Personally

Photo: BusinessInsider

3D printing has left its mark on every industry, including the lighting world, so if you're looking for something unique, consider investing in a custom light piece. Gantri accepts custom light designs and handles the production and sales, meaning you can design and 3D print your own lamp and other people can buy it too. What's more, these custom lamp designs fall comfortably within the price range of a quality lamp, with even the most expensive under $200, so you can easily afford to outfit your home with your own designs.

5. Light Meets Sound

Photo: FastCompany

Smart speakers are one of the most popular pieces of smart home technology on the market today, and while designers are working on improving the styling of these items, they're still an awkward fit – but Ikea has taken a smart step by turning the Sonos smart speaker into lamp. The Sonos makes an attractive base, but can also be networked with other speakers from the company's line, while the lamp topper fits neatly with Ikea's sleek aesthetic. Though it could still use some tweaks – the style and interface will likely improve in the next few years – this lamp is a good step towards integrating smart speakers with the broader home environment.

Lighting has a powerful impact on a home's style, shedding light on other decorative elements, serving a key functional role, and shaping how we use different spaces. Because it's so pragmatic, though, we often overlook the aesthetics of the lamp themselves. Next time you turn on a light, take a moment to really look at it. Does it fit into your home's style or could it do more to bring life to your home? If the answer is the latter, it may be time to try something new.

How to Choose a Nursing Home for Your Aging Parent

As America's population ages, long-term care needs continue to grow. As an adult child with an aging parent, determining which type of long-term care option is best can be challenging. And even if you know that a nursing home is the right fit, determining which nursing home to place them in is still a difficult proposition.

6 Tips to Find the Right Fit

For most adult children with aging parents, there comes a time where long-term care must be discussed. It's never an easy conversation to have, but it's an important one. In these discussions, always remember that your parents have the final say (assuming they're mentally competent to make choices). You can only influence their decision-making.

Photo: AgingInPlace

There are numerous long-term care options for aging parents, but a nursing home is often the best choice. These facilities include nursing care, 24-hour supervision, meals, social activities, and even rehabilitation services. But not all nursing homes are created equal. It's all about finding the right fit for your parents – something you can do by considering the following:

1. Quality of Care

If this is your first time looking at long-term care options and considering nursing homes for a parent, you probably have a very limited view of the industry. You may not realize that nursing home mistreatment is rampant. Neglect is also a huge concern – often leading to bad sores and other dangerous side effects for residents. And it's for these reasons that it's so important to evaluate facilities on quality of care (above all else).

Quality of care can be evaluated through numerous filters. You can visit the nursing home's website, read ratings and reviews online, and speak with friends who have loved ones in the facility. However, your five senses are your best tools. Any nursing home that you and your parent are considering should be visited in person. This allows you to see, smell, hear, touch, and taste (think food) the conditions.

2. Location

If possible, you should select a nursing home that's convenient for friends and loved ones to visit. If it's too far away, visits will be few and far between. It should be in an area that's familiar, yet accessible.

3. Price

Cost is obviously a concern for most people. There are significant price differences in the industry and rates depend on location, amenities, type of care, and reputation. Typically, you get what you pay for. Sit down with your parent and work through their financial situation to figure out what they can afford. It may be necessary to trim up expenses in other areas.

4. Amenities

What kinds of amenities are available? Consider things like meals, entertainment, social outings, rehabilitation services, on-staff nurses, transportation, house cleaning, etc. You don't want to pay for things that you don't use, but some of these conveniences are nice to have.

5. Staff Interactions

Be mindful of staff interactions with one another. This gives you a helpful look into what's going on behind the scenes.

"If the staff is rude to each other, they're going to be rude to your parent," elder care advocate Marion Somers explains. It's also helpful to note what kind of music is on the radio, or which shows/movies are on the television. "The music should be for the clients who are there, so if you're hearing hip-hop or hard rock then you know the administrator doesn't have a clue as how to deal with old people."

6. Resident Activity

Take note of how residents spend their afternoon hours. Do you see people walking around, playing games, interacting with one another, and conversing with nurses? Or does it seem quiet and lonely?

It's good to see people out and about. This is a sign that residents aren't isolating themselves in their rooms and mindlessly watching TV. They feel comfortable enough to get out and mingle.

Make a Confident Decision

The best decision will be one that takes your parent's needs into account, as well as some of your own preferences. It's not always possible to completely satisfy both ends of the spectrum, but some semblance of balance can typically be reached. Take the time to evaluate the options and help your parent find the long-term care option that's best for their physical health, emotional well-being, and financial stability.

Simple Kitchen Decor And Renovations That Don’t Break The Bank

Around 56% of homeowners in Canada are planning on renovating their homes this year, according to CIBC's Home Renovation Poll. If you're one of them, you've probably already started building an enticing living space. It wouldn't be surprising if you're targeting the kitchen next — an endeavor that can be quite financially heavy. That being said, how can you refresh and renew your kitchen without breaking the bank?

Photo: ElleDecor

Try Open Shelving

50% of Canadian homeowners admit to exceeding their home renovation budget. It's a good thing that kitchen upgrades and decor have budget-friendly options. For example, if you think your kitchen cupboards look tired, you can refresh them by taking out the doors. Open shelving increases storage options and makes your kitchen seem brighter and more open. It's also an excellent way to showcase any dishes you're particularly proud of. This kitchen upgrade is simple, and removing shelf doors doesn't really cost you money.

Add Modern Appliances

When it comes to renovating or upgrading your kitchen, your appliances are something that it's okay to splurge on. The right type of kitchen appliances — like an energy-efficient fridge — cuts down on your energy bills and adds value to your house, says Bryan Baeumler of House of Bryan. Most modern appliances come in varying styles, so you can pick one that enhances your kitchen's aesthetic. Putting in new appliances needs to be handled delicately to avoid any damages to your kitchen. A good way to achieve peace of mind is to check if you've got a home warranty offering you protection. The right home warranty plan can spare you from finding yourself out of pocket to address unforeseen repair bills.

Light It Up

A kitchen is all about atmosphere, and lighting goes a long way to enhance or detract from that atmosphere. So if you're seeking a stylish yet thrifty way to redecorate your kitchen, tapping into lighting is a smart move. You can choose to go with ambient lighting through flush mount lighting fixtures. If you want to put an accent on your new appliances, cabinets or counters, you can opt for toe kick lights. Not fond of shadows under cupboards? Puck lights are an inexpensive and stylish way to illuminate the space between cupboards and counters.

Your planned kitchen improvements should enhance your life, so you should do whatever it takes to make sure that your finances are shielded properly. That way, you can enjoy your sparkly new surroundings and not have any dark financial clouds hanging over your head.

8 DIY Tips for Staging Your Home When It’s Time to Sell

A well-staged home typically sells faster and for more than a home that's left as-is. As reported by Green Residential, a premier real estate firm in Houston, homes that are staged sell 73 percent faster than homes of similar value that were not staged. Hiring a stager before a home hits the market is ideal. However, their rates are beyond what many homeowners are willing to pay—it can cost over $2,000 for a single staging session!

The good news is, if you have an eye for design and aren't afraid of a little hard work, you can do some of the staging yourself. Follow these DIY staging tips to help your home sell quickly:

Photo: thegoodhartgroup

1. Make Minor Repairs

When homebuyers walk through a home with obvious problems, even though they're minor, they may automatically assume the home is a money pit. It can raise serious concerns that prevent you from receiving offers.

Remove this risk of buyer hesitation by making simple repairs here and there. Leaky faucets, clogged gutters, missing grout, chipped tiles, and other minor problems can be affordably fixed and increase the appeal of the home.

2. Include Art

Most homeowners fill their homes with personalized photos and sayings that are meaningful to them. When you're trying to impress buyers, remove the personal pieces and add tasteful, non-offensive art instead.

Many potential homebuyers have a difficult time picturing themselves in a home filled with others' personal effects—simple artwork makes all the difference.

3. Add Pops of Color

Neutral wall colors are best for walk-throughs as they appeal to a broader audience. However, you don't want it devoid of color. Add small pops of color here and there to liven it up. Bright throw pillows, artwork, rugs, and table settings make a beautiful addition to your home staging.

4. Rearrange Furniture

A simple metric of good design is functional space planning. Walkways should be wide and easy to navigate. You may need to rearrange the furniture to achieve this, and it might mean turning the furniture away from the television.

Staging is all about making things look good and making it easy to navigate the space–it doesn't have to be purely about comfort.

5. Pay Attention to Smell

Every home has a certain smell that can permeate everything in the home. Those who live there get used to it and may not notice its presence. However, it can be a huge turnoff for potential homebuyers since, next to sight, smell is the most prominent sense.

If you have a funny smell in your home, don't try to cover it with scented candles and incense, as this can make it worse. Instead, treat it by removing anything that might be contributing to a negative smell. Odor eaters like Febreze can also eliminate the smell and make it a welcoming environment.

6. Flip Through Décor Magazines

It's easier to imagine the style you want in your home by gathering inspiration. Look through decor magazines, websites, Pinterest pages, and social media profiles to develop ideas you like most. From there, you can find ways to affordably implement your ideas for a successfully-staged property.

7. Have It Professionally Cleaned

While working on staging and selling your home, you probably don't have time to thoroughly clean the place. A well-staged home is clean in places you may not have considered, like baseboards, ceiling fans, light fixtures, appliances, etc. A professional will not only remove the burden of cleaning from your list of responsibilities but also attend to areas that might otherwise get overlooked.

8. Highlight the Best Areas of the Home

No home is perfect, but there must be a few great features about your home. Redirect attention from the least appealing part of your home by highlighting the best areas. For example, your fireplace can become a focal point with furniture arranged around it, artwork on the mantle, and a cozy flame burning. That way, they won't see the small hole in the carpet a few feet away.

These are simple but profound ways to develop a well-staged home with the potential to sell quicker and for more than the typical property. Anyone can implement them with the right tools and an eye for good design.

7 Common Dental Problems Most Adults Will Have to Deal With

Some people get lazy when it comes to dental hygiene as they get older, but it's important to take good care of your teeth throughout your life. In fact, some people who have near-perfect teeth throughout their childhood and teenage years end up facing multiple problems later in life. Learning which dental problems are most common can help you protect yourself against them—and recognize them if they start happening to you.

Photo: functionalaestheticdentistry.com

The Most Common Dental Problems in Adulthood

These are some of the most common problems you may see as an adult:

1. Misalignment. As you grow and age, your teeth will be constantly adjusting. That means even if your teeth were perfectly straight as a teenager, they may eventually become misaligned when you're an adult. In many cases, this misalignment is purely cosmetic, resulting in a crooked smile or an unpleasant feel in your mouth. Other times, misalignment may result in pain or other oral conditions. Either way, you'll have the option of using Invisalign to gradually, painlessly, and invisibly adjust your teeth back to where they should be.

2. Bad breath. Bad breath can have many root causes, but it always has something to do with your mouth, including your tongue and your teeth. Brushing your teeth regularly, scrubbing your tongue, flossing, and using mouthwash can all help you control the symptoms of bad breath, unless there's a secondary cause (like gum disease) which your good habits can't directly control.

3. Cavities. Tooth decay occurs gradually over time, usually when teeth aren't adequately maintained with healthy habits. If the decay goes untreated long enough, it will result in the formation of cavities, which are holes in your teeth that can increase in size and severity. More than 92 percent of adults have had at least one cavity during their life. If cavities are allowed to grow worse, without being filled, they can eventually reach the root of your tooth, at which point you may need a root canal or tooth extraction to avoid the development of abscesses. Fortunately, if caught early, cavities can usually be treated with a simple filling in a single appointment.

4. Gum disease. Gum disease is an umbrella term for any infection of the gums that surround your teeth. Though anyone can acquire gum disease, adults over the age of 30 are at higher risk. You'll also be at higher risk of gum disease if you smoke, if you suffer from dry mouth, or if you have diabetes. Gum disease occurs in two stages: gingivitis and periodontist. If you catch gum disease early, you can avoid most further complications (which include tooth loss).

5. Gum recession. Gum recession is an irreversible process that occurs gradually over time, frequently when adults aggressively brush their teeth. Over time, the gums sustain damage, and slowly recede, exposing more of the tooth (and eventually the root of the tooth). This creates more pockets where bacteria can form, and in extreme cases, can completely expose the root of your tooth. In advanced cases, where untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.

6. Tooth trauma and dental emergencies. It's also common for adults to suffer from some kind of dental trauma; for example, they may fall down and chip a tooth on the pavement, or suffer a cracked tooth when biting down on something hard. The structural integrity of your teeth will likely decline over time, making you more vulnerable to these emergencies.

7. Oral cancer. Though not as common as something like bad breath or cavities, oral cancer is common enough that you need to be aware of it. Millions of people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, and it's estimated that someone in the United States dies from oral cancer every hour. It most commonly occurs in adults over the age of 40. It occurs more frequently in people who smoke or use chewing tobacco, and in those who drink alcohol excessively. Oral cancer is highly treatable if caught early.

The Importance of Regular Checkups

The best thing you can do to stave off most of these dental problems is practicing good dental hygiene—i.e., brushing, flossing, and rinsing with anticavity mouthwash on a daily basis. Aside from that, the best thing to do is attend regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist. This is your chance to catch problems early, before they have a chance to get any worse. You'll also get a chance to talk to your dentist about your habits, including ways you could potentially improve them.

Why You Should Never Hook Off Hawaii as Your Dream Destination

Everybody has a secret bucket list of the destinations they want to visit sometime in their life. If you are a lover of state of the art cities with a high fashion scene, pulsating nightlife and thriving fun activities, then Hawaii might not be in your bucket list. Well, if that is the case then here is a motivational kick for you to pull up that forgotten Hawaii to the top of your travel list because it is totally worth the money, time and effort.

Photo: Tauck

Reasons why Hawaii should be your next dream destination:

1. The Weather is Always Good

Hawaii has hands down some of the best weather in the entire world. It never goes too far in any extreme to make you think of a particular time to visit this place. You can plan at night and get ready to go in the day to Hawaii because every day is the perfect one for the trip. Summers might be a bit drier and winters wetter, but the weather is never hot enough to break your sweat like crazy and winters are not cold enough to freeze your life. It does receive rain showers but who minds getting splashed by rain a bit when you are already swimming in its stunning turquoise water?

2. People are Amazing

Even if the weather of Hawaii wouldn't have been so pleasant, the warm hearts of the Hawaiians are enough to melt any snow. Yes, they are that genuinely amazing people who give great value to 'Aloha'.

Aloha is a Hawaiian word which means 'hello' and 'goodbye'. But it is more than a literary word having great cultural value as it depicts the people's love, kindness, sympathy, and compassion for others. And this 'Aloha' energy is not only for their own people; it is also for the tourists.

You will always see smiley locals, politely greeting everyone. Isn't it amazing to live for some days in a marvelous paradise all surrounded by cheerful people? Our robotic life needs this escape – no?

3. Its Culture is Matchless

Hawaiian culture is one of the richest cultures in the world, and it is evident from the fact that it is the only U.S. state which is comprised of minorities. This state became alive with the majority of the people who traveled to this island from China, Japan, Philippines, Latin, and other parts of the world while carrying along their cultures. That's the reason that Hawaiian cuisine, customs, and traditions are a fine amalgamation of colors of all these countries. So, a visit to Hawaii takes you amidst the melting pot of all these cultures to get a taste of almost all the regions in one go.

4. Accommodations are Perfect

Every happening tourist destination offers many accommodation options for a peaceful and better vacation experience – so does Hawaii! But what makes Hawaii's accommodations one of its kinds are its private rental villas which not only offer remarkable amenities, but they also save you from spending a huge sum of money on multiple hotels, plus you get to be with the family rather than separated. On top of that, their beachfront view and tranquil ambiance make luxury rentals in Hawaii one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

Lively destinations are the best to pump up your heart, but sometimes heading to places which pump up your life is the best to learn new meanings of life. And Hawaii is surely that place!
